Charles Dickens is known, amongst other things, for rather unusual names for the characters in his stories, a number of which evolved from nicknames given to his ten children.
Over the years, nicknames assigned to his children included Lucifer Box, Mild Glo’ster, Master Floby, Young Skull, Chickenstalker, Ocean Specter, Skittles and most egregiously, that for his youngest son Edward: Plornishmaroontigoonter, later Plornish-Maroon, Plornishghenter, The Plorn and eventually Plornish, as eventually used in the book Little Dorrit.
