Ferret-legging is an endurance sport in which competitors attempt to keep a pair of ferrets trapped in their trousers for as long as possible.
It’s not clear where it came from - though it’s been suggested to have derived from the era when only the wealthy could keep animals for hunting, so poachers would have been forced to hide animals such as ferrets in their clothing.
It had some resurgence of popularity in northern England in the 1970s, where patrons would have a go in public houses (though drinking before participating was generally frowned upon!) and betting on who could last the longest.
In 1972, the ferret-legging record stood at 40 seconds. By 1977, the world record stood at over five hours.
As of 2010, the record stands at five hours, thirty minutes, which was carried out not only to set a new record but to raise money for charity at the same time.
